A large-scale hotel with a complex challenge

Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol A4, with 715 rooms, a large conference center, an extensive restaurant, wellness facilities, a swimming pool, and even a sports park with a padel court, is an impressive location. As one of the largest hotels in the Netherlands, it deals daily with a complex water management system.

During preparations for a major renovation, it quickly became clear that there was a serious legionella issue. “We couldn’t get it under control,” says director Bill van der Valk. “Our building dates from 1989 and opened in 1992. We have to deal with old, long pipes and even hemp material in the insulation, which is now considered risky. We reached the point where we had to flush the entire building.”

Collaboration with Holland Water

At that point, Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol A4 came into contact with Holland Water. “We sat down with them to see how we could make the risk of legionella manageable. Not only in the old part of the hotel, but also in the new construction.”

The choice ultimately fell on the HW Bifipro® system, a copper-silver ionisation solution. “During the renovation, Holland Water guided us every step of the way, from installation to sampling and managing water quality.”

From Recurring Problems to a Structural Solution

The results of the collaboration were quickly noticeable. “Where previously we just managed to stay within the standards, we now have a water management system that structurally contributes to safe and reliable water quality,” says Bill. “And above all, that means one thing: maximum safety for our guests. That is the most important thing for us.”

In addition to implementing the HW Bifipro®, Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol A4 also made a digitalization leap. “We have automated our management plan and now work with a digital thermometer. This means that not only the technical service can flush, but also, for example, the night watchman, who can easily take measurements with a tablet.”

One Reliable Partner for Everything

Another major advantage? Simplifying water safety. “Previously, we worked with multiple parties. Now everything is managed by Holland Water. That makes management more efficient and transparent.”

Van der Valk Hotel Schiphol A4 was the first location to start working with Holland Water. “There was an immediate good connection, and we find that very important,” says Bill. “The price was good, but the most important thing remains the safety of our guests and preventing legionella risks.”
