JA Resorts & Hotel Groups (with five locations in the United Arab Emirates) measured plastic water bottle consumption among their guests over a year in 2019. The chain discovered that as many as 1.7 million plastic bottles were used. The majority (1.4 million!) consisted of 500ml bottles. To immediately reduce CO2 emissions and environmental damage, JA is adopting new water technologies and bottling systems.
In the Netherlands and Belgium, we are used to pure tap water, a result of the high quality standards our drinking water companies must meet. In other countries, especially outside Europe, tap water often does not have such a good and reliable reputation. As a result, bottled water is much more common there, which brings extra transport—and therefore extra CO2 and pollution. The plastic bottles and packaging also contribute to the growing plastic waste problem, which is again unsustainable.
Clean and safe tap water puts an end to environmentally harmful practices. Water-scarce countries such as the United Arab Emirates are increasingly turning to water tech to keep their tap water pure without chemical additives, making it safe and pleasant to drink. This is now noticeable in hotels and airports, where tap water from drinking fountains or in reusable bottles is increasingly competing with plastic packaging.
