Once and for all a safe water installation

Using a patented dosing system, the biocides in the HW Bifipro® are introduced into the water installation in the form of precise amounts of copper and silver ions. The powerful antibacterial properties of copper and silver in ionised form ensure that present (Legionella) bacteria are killed, and that the biofilm – the main breeding ground for Legionella – is deactivated and eroded.

How can I save water and energy with the HW Bifipro?

As early as 2014, the Dutch government decided that users of the HW Bifipro® system are allowed to lower the temperature of their hot water systems to 50 instead of 60 degrees. In addition, the frequency of the weekly flushing regime may also be reduced to once every two weeks.

Lowering the hot water temperature has a significant impact on energy consumption, and therefore also on CO2 emissions. For example, for a hotel, the annual savings can quickly add up to several tens of megawatt hours of energy and dozens of tons of CO2. To give an idea: on average, every Dutch person is responsible for 16 tons of CO2 per year.

In which applications can this technology be used?

The use of copper and silver ionisation is only permitted at the so-called priority institutions mentioned in Article 35 of the Drinking Water Decree.

Priority locations are locations with a higher risk to public health, such as healthcare facilities, hospitals, hotels and swimming pools.

Is the biocide approved by the Ctgb?

The Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) has extended the authorisation of the HW Bifipro biocide until 1 July 2033. The HW Bifipro biocide (authorisation number 13293N) is the consumable – in the form of electrodes – used by the copper and silver ionisation system HW Bifipro.

Saving water and energy

As early as 2014, the Dutch government decided that users of the HW Bifipro® system are allowed to lower the temperature of their hot water systems to 50 instead of 60 degrees. In addition, they were also permitted to reduce the frequency of their flushing regime. The competent ministry thus recognized the exceptional effectiveness of copper and silver ionisation.

After implementing the HW Bifipro, users can, under specific conditions, lower the hot tap water temperature to a minimum of 50 °C. To do so, users must apply for an equivalency declaration from the municipality. The condition is that the drinking water installation has been clean for at least one year and that there is a stable situation regarding both the copper and silver levels in the treated water and the absence of Legionella.
