How does copper‑silver ionisation work in the HW Bifipro® Cool?

In particular, the accumulated copper ions ensure that the biofilm (the main breeding ground for legionella bacteria and the source of large-scale colonization) is deactivated and eroded over time. Copper thus determines the ultimate effectiveness of the biocide and long-term legionella control.

The silver ions mainly contribute in the initial stage by directly killing free-moving legionella bacteria. The symbiotic effect between copper and silver also plays an important role in this process.

Does using the HW Bifipro® Cool eliminate the need for additional chemicals?

Because the installation of copper and silver ionization technology (such as the HW Bifipro® Cool from Holland Water) takes the required capacity into account, each cooling water system receives a customized water treatment system.

With the HW Bifipro® Cool, the consumption and flow rate of the supply water are the main criteria for determining how many tubes (‘chambers’) with copper and silver electrodes are needed. This ensures that the correct dose of copper and silver ions is delivered to the supply water. As a result, all chemical and other additives can be eliminated and, with the HW Bifipro® Cool, replaced by proper pretreatment and optimal process control.

Is the biocide approved by the Ctgb?

The Board for the Authorisation of Plant Protection Products and Biocides (Ctgb) has extended the authorisation of the HW Bifipro biocide until 1 July 2033. The HW Bifipro Cool biocide (authorisation number 13292N) is the consumable – in the form of electrodes – used by the copper and silver ionisation system HW Bifipro® Cool.

Smarter and more sustainable

The copper and silver ionisation method, as further developed by Holland Water in the HW Bifipro® Cool, is also ‘smart’. Advanced equipment such as the flow meter, which measures the (peak) flow of the water with great precision, ensures—together with the patented current control—that exact amounts of copper and silver ions are added to the water. If desired, the HW Bifipro® Cool can be adjusted.

This allows the quality of the water to be continuously monitored and archived, not only by the manager of the water system but also, remotely, by experts from Holland Water. This makes the HW Bifipro® Cool a data-driven solution against legionella.
